Chilean Patagonia

The Chilean Patagonia is a geographic region that extends from the city of Puerto Montt all the way south to Tierra del Fuego. Its boundaries are the Pacific Ocean, to the west, and the Andes Range, to the east. The name ‘Patagonia’ originates from Ferdinand Magellan’s round-the-world expedition, the first ever in history. During his stay in the region, Magellan named the aboriginal settlers ‘Patagones’, in relation to the enormous footprints left behind by their fur-clad feet in the snow.

The region is marked by a cold evergreen jungle, a kind of flora which is unique to this part of the world. Towards the Andes, the scenery changes gradually, transforming from jungle into extensive plains, commonly known as ‘Pampas’.

The region is home to the northern and southern ice fields, two of the planet’s largest freshwater reserves, and huge glaciers that seem to drift into the sea.

Aysen, is the northernmost part of the Chilean Patagonia. It is one of the least inhabited places on Earth, with a population density of 0.7 inhabitants per square kilometer, making it, therefore, one of the most untouched places on the planet. The latter translates in a place of unparalleled beauty and breathtaking scenery.

Given its location, the area receives few visitors during the year, adding to the uniqueness of the experience, unspoiled by mass tourism.

Aysen’s islands and canals are famous for their beauty. A kayaking trip will yield views rarely seen by many, including the colonies of whales that come to the area to take shelter and feed.

For angling enthusiasts, the region is home to a large number of rivers, ideal for fishing or white-water sports.

Carretera Austral

The Carretera Austral is the sole route that links Aysen with the rest of Chile. Built at the end of the 70s, it is a far cry from a modern highway and more of adventure trail through the jungle, allowing travelers to progress safely through the vast vegetation of Patagonia.
